Getting paid when deployed-navy?

I'm just curious, I see people on here saying that when they were in the navy they went to 20+ countries. When they were there, they must have to pay in the national currency… So everytime they go somewhere new do they have to withdraw different cash? Do they end up with a bunch of extra money from different countries?

Of course I don't mean Afghanistan, but my friend in South Korea has bought McDonald's, Krispy Kreme, and an iPhone 5! Does he use a credit/debit card, US dollars, or whatever the Korean currency is? I can't get ahold if him now to ask him.

Military members aren't paid in cash anymore. They are paid in US Dollars by direct deposit into a US bank account.

In the old days, troops were paid in US dollars in cash or later on by check. That ended in the 1970's I think.

If they want foreign currency while deployed they can exchange US dollars for foreign currency in an on base/post/camp American licensed banking facility which is contracted to the US military. Or they can exchange their USD at local off post foreign banks.

US troops as well as US civilians can buy things in foreign countries with credit/debit cards or local currency. The South Korean currency is the Won. Most countries don't accept US Dollars in stores. There are exceptions, i.e. Canada, some places in Mexico near the border, some countries in the West Indies which are tourist sites.

You get paid by US Government Check in US Dollars OR your pay is direct deposit into a banking or credit union account.

It is your responsibility to change money from US Dollars to the local Currency when visiting a foreign port. Normally a Representative will come on board ship to exchange money so you don't get ripped off.

You do accumulate a buch of foreign currency and change. Just hang on to them for the next trip.

It is called direct deposit.

Yes when in a foreign country you pay that country's currency. Some port calls can have US bases so they can use the base facilities for some things including a money exchange to get local currency. They can use their debit/credit card to take money out of the ATM or pay for things. Some who are stationed in a location for a period of time might be able to open a local bank account to use that when purchasing things. Some people will also keep a bit of local currency for souvenirs.

ETA did I say you get paid in that country's currency? No I say you PAY that country's currency, which is what was asked. Why would you not have to use it just because you are in the military?

On port visits, you will have to use the currency of the country you are visiting. When you are another country, you can go to ATM, Banks, Currency Exchanges to exchange your US Dollar Bills to the local currency. And before you leave the country, you can go back to the banks/exchanges to change your left-over money back to US Bills. But many times, you may have some foreign money left over (normally, small amounts of coins).

Keep in mind that many places in other countries also accept US Bills & credit cards.

Btw, S. Korean Currency is called a "Won." I think it is 15-16 Won = 1 US Dollar.

Alot of stores and such in foreign countries accept US dollars. They can use a Credit Card or Cash. Also alot of times the ATMs in foreign countries offer a choice of currencies, local and US. Why because the US dollar is the most widely accepted currency in the world.
