How do I restore an iphone and basically wipe it? (Read details)?

So I was given an iPhone from a guy a work. He said his son disabled it and he never knew the stuff. He knew I was tech savy. I'm just 19 and he was 50 so I say generation. I'm more of an android fan but I thought I d try this out. So what I need to know is how to do this cuz the whole iTunes thing is BS. I have to put it in recovery mode which last 15 minutes but I have to update the phone b4 I can restore it. The update takes 30 minutes so wtf am I supposed to do? It's an iPhone 5s btw

Put the iPhone in DFU mode and restore in iTunes.

Note: If the phone has an iCloud account associated with it AND has Find My iPhone enabled, you will need the iCloud account in order to get past the setup screen. There's no way around that.

Oh i do have Find My iPhone on, but one time when my dad took it to the store and didn't come back i got on the icloud web and to see where my iphone was to see where my dad was and it was worthless!
