How do I stop iTunes from changing the name of my downloaded files?

I don't know how many people are still using iTunes, but I have files perfectly catalogued by year/month/day, but when I copy it over to iTunes, it only has the program name without the date (the most important part in this instance). When I looked up this problem, everyone said to go to iTunes preferences, advanced settings, and uncheck the keep box. But it didn't change anything. I even quit iTunes and reset my computer, but it didn't fix it. I would rather not have to manually change the names because there are hundreds of them.

If nothing else works, do the necessary edits in multiple sessions.

I know what it's like because I once had to empty my Hotmail inbox of over 5,000 items.
Several hours per day for five or six days was required to clear it all out.

ITunes will sort by its own parameters. Period. So do many mp3 players. (I have 2 Creatives, a year apart - they do not sort the SAME MUSIC the same way!) Adding fields in your computer is useless. I had barcode-gun scanned over 5,000 CDs into an indexing program (we're professional classical musicians) so I can physically locate everything in both our studios - but unless I load up on my iPhone by album, or some playlist of things I need to listen to for study, it is worthless for me. Ripping just to rename seldom works because of internal coding; I open an orchestral track, and it had been retitled in Japanese, because it was produced there. Maddening. So you can try at least some short playlists - but do not expect to have internal control. Best you can do is random, device-driven smaller lists. No way out…
