How to turn a file in to m4r from m4a?

I'm trying to create a new sms ringtone for my iphone, i have followed all the steps but when it comes to renaming the file from m4a to m4r there actually isn't a space to do that, the name of the song is just that, no m4a at the end. I've tried just typing it in and it won't work.

Your system settings are hiding the extensions of file types it recognizes. If you are using windows 7 or Vista, open up the control panel and type into the search box "Folder". After it finds some results, one of them should say "Folders" or "Folder Options", double click it. In here there's a bunch of options, most of which have a radio dial check or a checkbox. You are looking for "Hide extensions of known filetypes", make sure it is UNCHECKED.

Now you should be able to see and change the.m4r to.m4a without issue.

If you are using XP, you will need to see how to do this on microsoft.com. If you are on Mac, you will need to go on apple.com, and if on Linux, you will need to go to the website for your specific build (most likely ubuntu.com).

  • Trying to convert itunes song to ringtone, file name not showing up with.m4a? I've found several step by step instructions on how to turn an itunes song into a ringtone for my iphone. I make the song 30 seconds, create an aac version, hit show in windows explorer, but then the next step says change the ".m4a" in the song title file name to ".m4r". The only problem is the file name just shows up with the normal song title, no ".m4a". Any idea what i'm doing wrong?
