It depends on how you use it. But it should last at least 3 years.
Most iPhones can last a lot longer than their owners keep them. Depending on how much you use it and how well you care for it, an iPhone should last for ten years or so. The battery is what usually wears out first, although it can be replaced in most cases.
A long time, I used iphone 3GS for almost 4 years and never had one issue with it. I could have easily kept using it but at some point you will want the newer hardware because things are always improving.
It depends on how well you take care of it. Generally, a lot of manufacturers don't focus on quality. They look forward to you upgrading after usually no more than 2-3 years, if that.
It doesn't 'die'.

The thing that really does an iPhone ( or any other phone ) in, is usually technology. If a phone is taken care of, it should last for ten years, but technology will have likely passed it by in five years.
- My iPhone 4s only charges until 4%, and then dies! Why?
