How much memory do my photos take up?

I just got a new iphone 4s and i had a ipod touch 4g before that. On the ipod about 1000 photos took up about 250mb of memory or storage. On the iphone though just 23 photos take up 60 mb! I took all of the photos with the devices. Why is this so?

Added (1). I didn't do anything with the photos, I went out, took some photos with my iphone, came back, plugged it into my mac and checked how much space it took up and BAM over 60 mb.
on my ipod i even have photos i donwloaded from the internet and put them there. So they must be higher resulution as well but they still take up less space!

What files are the original photos in? What type of file is the new photos in? It could be that they were converted to a file that has a higher storage rate for higher resolution to make them look better. Honestly I have no clue but it's worth a shot. Photos don't take up much more then a couple kb so there isn't a reason for 23 to take up 60 mb. Are you sure it's just the photos? You could have also transferred over videos and songs as well.

"23 photos take up 60 mb!"
That sounds about right - it's an average of around 3MB per photo.

"1000 photos took up about 250mb of memory"
That's because those were smaller and lower quality pictures.

Photo size can vary greatly depending on quality settings and megapixel.

The iPhone has a higher megapixel camera so the pictures take up more space when taken at the highest setting.

The iPod touch 4G has a 0.7MP camera vs the 4S which has a 8MP. Of course as a result the pictures taken from the 4S would be bigger.

Just cause they came from the internet does not mean they are higher resolution. They could be smaller. It would depend on what images you downloaded & their size.
