How to activate my iphone 4? - 1

I'm a Verizon Wireless customer and currently have an old LG cosmos. My father upgraded to the iPhone 5 and gave me his old iPhone 4. I want to activate it under my current phone number but I can't find an article that will tell me how to go about doing this. When I plug the phone into the computer via USB it still says [my father's name]'s iPhone.
I tried calling the *228 number and activating over the phone with the billing account password but that didn't work either.
Trying to avoid going to the Verizon store and blowing $20, but if I do have to go in there and have them activate it please let me know!

Sorry, you have to go to the Verizon store. They should activate it for free though.

Showing your father's name on the iPhone on itunes doesn't mean that it needs activation to your number, it's simply the name of the phone,
you can double(slowly) click on it and change it
OR
restore the iphone to factory settings via iTunes and start all over as a new factory iPhone.

This may seem like a silly question, but I'm not that informed about cell phone plans really… I've had a iPhone 5 for the past year and a half through Verizon. It broke today. Like full on broke nto covered by insurance… I found a Verizon iPhone 4 for sale for like 70 bucks in great condition from someone on craigslist. If I buy that, can I go into Verizon with it and have them activate it for me and have it be my new phone? Does this make sense?
