How to backup my iPhone 4 in recovery mode?

So my iPhone 4 went black a few days ago. Assuming it was broken, I went and purchased a Samsung Galaxy s3. Then I realized that my iPhone was working again. So I was trying to find a way to put all of my contacts from the iPhone to my computer and download them to the Samsung Galaxy s3, but I ended up putting my iPhone in recovery mode because it told me i had an update. So now, I'm trying to backup my contacts on itunes WITHOUT restoring it! Because i just don't want to lose my contacts. But my daughter has all of her iPod things backed up on iTunes. Is there a way I can backup the iPhone even though it is in Recovery mode? I DON't want to restore it. I want to save my stuff, then restore once i have everything.

Let it update, at the end of it, it will prompt you to restore as a new iPhone or from a back up, you choose the back up.

Michiko, you can use a backup recovery software to do that. I would personally recommend Total Saver from MyPhoneData to get all your contacts, photos, videos etc from your iPhone's backup.
That is going to get all your stuff on your computer and you can then play around with it.

You don't have to do a restore at all.
Infact, you can do all of this without even having to connect your iPhone to iTunes.

  • Iphone will not restore from recovery mode? I tried to restore my iphone via itunes but is now stuck in recovery mode. I press 'Restore' on itunes and it downloads the software (takes about half an hour!) and then nothing happens. There's no error message or anything. I've tried this several times now. I've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and I've tried turning off my firewall. Nothing has worked so far and my phone is out of action. Any ideas?
