Tap settings and click general. Next, select network and turn off the switch that says Cellular Data. This will disable all data connections (3G, 4G, LTE), but not just 3G. Your Wi-Fi will still work just fine.
Actually iPhone 5 doesn't have a option to disable 3G, one of the reasons why I dumped Apple after trying it for the first time. It does have an option to turn on LTE and to enable/disable cellular data. But the option to disable 3G was removed a while ago, I suspect due to the massive profiteering scheme all of the providers have going.
