Just to set the record straight…
There's no such thing as a bricked iphone. Its like saying your car is junk because it gets a flat tire.
Jailbreaking is not immoral or illegal but it does void the warranty on a newer iphone. Since yours is a 4 it isn't under warranty so there's nothing to void.
When in the past I have had snaffoos it always worked hooking up to itunes (make sure its the newest itunes, that sometimes makes a difference) and holding the home and off button until recognized (over 20 seconds).
Now it seems like you might be doing since you are getting error codes but try restoring it like that a couple times. It is fixable.
