How to get my own Wi-Fi hotspot in my dorm?

So I go to school at the University of Arizona. I live in one of the newer dorms. Whenever I'm in the hallway on my floor, the Wi-Fi is very fast. However I live in a suite style dorm. So the minute I go into my room, my Wi-Fi signal is very low or the network will disappear. I''ve went to the IT people many times, they said I can't have a router or a repeater in my room. So I'm basically stuck with this stupid Wi-Fi. Is there a way (cheap) and sort of safe way for me to have my on Wi-Fi hotspot in my room? I don't want to buy a hotspot on my iPhone.

Maybe you could buy a directional antenna, and angle that towards the hotspot in the hall. Or run a cable, and put the antenna out where reception is good.

Another option is to make a reflector out of foil, and use that to focus the signal on your computer. Look up Wi-Fi booster on youtube or google for how to make one.

Can you get a land-line telephone in your dorm? If so, you can get DSL and your own modem and Internet service. Just $50 a month, give or take a bit.

If there's any network in your dorm, you can create your own free Wi-Fi hotspot just with My Wi-Fi Router software and laptop. Free download My Wi-Fi Router and it will turn your laptop into a free Wi-Fi hotspot. It's really the best virtual Wi-Fi router you ever used.

Might try something like that. I haven't tried it myself, but $20-$40 isn't bad and it doesn't violate school policy, which adding your own device might.
