How to have wireless internet in dorm?
I want to have a Wi-Fi in my own room at college. My school Wi-Fi sucks.
I would use it for mostly for Facebook, Netflix, homework etc.nothing huge.
I have apple products, Mac, iPhone, iPad, apple tv
It does not have to be super fast internet, just the equivalent of a comman home Wi-Fi system.
So can I just have a Wi-Fi router and plug it into the power out let and then I can use Wi-Fi on my laptop, iPad etc?
Can I have a wireless internet completly independent from my schools internet?
I'm a biology major so I have no clue what to do
You could hook up to the dorms internet service with your own equipment if it is compatible. Or if your dorm will allow it you can have your own Internet service installed and pay for it.
Yes there's a solution to your problem. It's a Wi-Fi usb stick offered by isp. Try call the isp to find out about it.
You need to have an internet feed to your wireless router's WAN or Internet (whichever the router maker calls it) port. This can be a DSL feed or a cable internet feed or a cell internet feed (if you have the proper router that can take a cell internet feed).
You will not likely be able to add DSL to your in room phone line (if you in fact have an in room phone line) and cable internet is not likely available either. This leaves you to a cell internet feed and this may not be as fast as your existing dorm feed.
You should not try to connect a wireless router or wireless access point to a wired network feed as this is in almost all cases prohibited by the school's IT department - and they will find it if you sneak it in. Ultimately you will pay for such an error.
First, you need to check with your school to see if they will allow you to do this.
If so, you would need to contact your local Internet Service Provider (such as AT&T, Time Warner, Comcast, or whatever company is in your school's area) to see if they offer internet service in the dorms. If they do, you can sign up for service that includes a wireless router.
You would then pay for the monthly service and the modem would be purchased through that company. Often, new service has discounts that include offers for free or rebated wireless routers. There are also upgraded routers that are sold in electronics stores. Once you know which ISP you are using, you can find out which routers could be used with it.

- Suddenly can't connect to college dorm Wi-Fi? I have an Asus laptop running windows 7. My friends laptops and my iPhone and tablet can all connect to the Wi-Fi here but recently my laptop hasn't been able to identify the Internet. Before whenever this would happen I would restart my computer and I could connect. But not not even that works.
