How to make my android work with my iphone 5 headphones?

So my friend gave me his iPhone 5 headphones and there awesome but the volume buttons won't work and they do work with his phone and my ipad. My android is running ice cream sandwich

I don't think you can make them work, apple and android are not compatible

Does it matter when there are volume buttons on the phone?

The headphones are wired differently, which has nothing to do with the operating system.

I have an iPhone and my apple headphones were working fine for one second but when I unplugged them and plugged them back in it doesn't work and the sound comes out of the speaker. I thought it was the headphones but they work on my computer and anything else. Other head phones work on my iphone, I tried 3 other headphones and they were all fine. It's just my apple head phones that don't work. Does anyone know how to fix this?
