How to read a map on an Iphone?

I just got an Iphone, and I want to go somewhere without having to be driven to or ride a bus. I've tried timing myself to get to a place on time, I know where left and right are, and where west, east, north and south are, I read the signs, enter in the address and all that. But every time I do, I just get more and more lost and I never get to where I want to go. So what can I do to help me read a map better, and yes I'm using the Maps app on my Iphone. I'm too embarrassed to ask for help around me because I don't want to seem like I'm stupid, but it really sucks. I feel like an idiot.

Added (1). I do everything right, except on how to read it.

Uh, put in an address and hit go, it will give you turn by turn… Or download google maps app.

  • What's the best GPS map app for iPhone? I need a GOOD map where I could mark the start point and destination and it would guide me where to go. I've used the iOS map and Google maps and both got me lost!
  • What is the best Map app with A to B routes for iphone iOS 6? I Really miss the way the old maps worked after upgrading to ios 6. I have the YP app where you can look up places and would click 'get directions' and it would take me to Maps which would then put a red pin where I was currently, a green pin where I wanted to go, traced three possible routes in blue, and had a blue pin (me) that would show me where I was along the route. I NEED THIS BACK! Is there any map app that will do this for me again?
  • IPhone5 read 5%, plugged in to charge then instantly read 26%? It's been doing this a lot lately. Earlier it read 37% and I restarted it and it read 63%. Do I have a bad battery or is the percentage reader just not accurate?
  • IPhone Music app doesnot work with car audio bluetooth system but Google Map works? I have iPhone 3GS which have google map app, it works fine with car audio bluetooth system. I could here turn by turn direction in car speaker. But why music app does not work the same way? Any clue. My Car is 2009 Camry LE which have A2DP support
