How to replace a broken Iphone 4s?

My Iphone 4s is broken. It works, but the screen has gone black so I can't see anything and the screen is also cracked. I have verizon and the only option I see on the verizon website to replace it is to upgrade it which would cost over 500 dollars. It is no longer under warranty and I do not have insurance. What is the best/least-expensive way to replace it?

In the future, you might want to consider purchasing AppleCare+.It is $100, and it will provide you with 2 years of phone support and 2 years of hardware coverage. It will protect against accidental damage, as well. You're allowed to claim 2 incidents per year, and would only need to pay a $45 deductible for accidental damage. Hardware issues from use or defects are fully covered.
