How to stop iTunes from opening by itself?

It's really annoying when you're right in the middle of something, and iTunes just randomly decides to pop up out of the blue. After magically opening, it gives me a message prompt about it not being the default player. Then asking me for the option to change it so, but I always deny that, and close the program. I've been doing a lot of searching around the web, and have found similar complaints, but they still haven't fixed my specific problem.

For starters,

I use a PC. I don't have any widgets installed. I don't have any devices such as an iPhone plugged into it. I've even tried disabling both iTunes, and iTunes Helper by going through msconfig/startup. I even went as far as to try deleting iTunes Helper, and then attempting a reboot.iTunes still keeps opening on it's own.

How do I stop this?

Do ALT then CTRL then Delete. Then click on task manager and go into startup applications and turn Itunes off

Click on the Windows menu button, (the little circle thing at the bottom left corner) then click All PROGRAMS then find a folder that says STARTUP then open it and drag itunes out.

I assume ITunes is opening up when you try to play a music file. You can fix this by going into control panel -> Programs -> Default Programs -> Set default Programs, ITunes should show up there in the program list, click on it and then click Choose defaults for this program then deselect every file extension. You can also set a different music player to be your default program, like windows media player for example. That should fix it.

To clarify further, go to Start > Run > msconfig > Startup and remove the tick from the iTunes entry.
