How to unlock iphone 5 from UK to another network?

Well my friend just got his iPhone 5 from the UK and he lives in the Philippines. The problem is that the Philippines sim doesn't work on his iPhone, its says "No Service" so he is going to return his phone back to the UK to unlock it… But is there anyway for him to unlock it himself? Apparently, he needs the iFactory, which is I don't know… But yeah. Its just THE POINT IS THE SIM HE PUT THAT IS NOT FROM THE UK… IT DOESN't WORK. So yeah… If you can tell me the reason behind this. That will help.
