How to update my iphone 3gs to ios4 operating system?

When my phone is connected to iTunes it says I have the most current version and that's iOS 3.1.3. How do I update this?

Go to setting ---> software update--->here is where it will show you the update. If it doesn't, something is wrong iwth you iphone! GL!

Are you sure you've got a 3GS? Because the original iPhone had a maximum version of 3.1.3.

Are you sure that's an iPhone 3GS? It can update to 6.0.1 just fine.

& then press Restore in iTunes while pressing Shift on your keyboard & select the downloaded firmware & it should work.

As I know, iPhone 3GS can be updated into iOS 6, why you don't try it? But if you wants to jailbreak your phone you should update it into iOS 5.
To perform software update from your phone, open settings - general - software update, but this action can only be performed over Wi-Fi, if you can't find any software update you should download the iOS manually, there's a lot of website that provide the os and the instruction to updating your phone manually via iTunes (e.g idownloadblog).
