I need a good gaming and streaming router?

Me and a friend of mine are rooming in a house together in about a month and we need a good streaming and gaming router. We plan to get Time Warner Cable internet at a speed of about 30 MBPS and we need a good router that can support streaming and gaming. It also needs to be able to handle multiple devices. The devices that I can know for sure that will be connected are: 2 laptops, 2 Xbox's, 2 iPhone's, and an iPad. We plan to have friends over so we may have a few more devices on the connection. Our price range is probably $100-$130. The streaming aspect will mainly be used for Youtube. Also we want one that has decent security settings but we don't need one that is over the top.

Your best bet would be a dual band router, there are ones expecially meant for gaming consoles. There are also ways to splice the Wi-Fi into two halves so you each get your "own Wi-Fi"

Not a real lot of difference performance wise between those routers.dd-wrt support is nice if you need feature the base router does not provide.

I suspect you will still have a bottleneck at the ISP since you will never get the rated speed especially during peak hours.

For streaming inside the house you want to keep as much of this wired as you possibly can. Wireless is half duplex only one device can use it at a time and they tend to stomp all over each other so you want as few sharing as possible.

It may also benefit you to run 2 different routers, one for g and the other for N. Although routers will now attempt to switch back and forth with a mix of different clients they do no do it very well. Beside 2 routers gives you 2 different wireless groups which mean you can now have 2 machines transmitting at the same instant.

  • Would I need a fast mbps rate to host audio streaming? My ambition is to create an iPhone app, in which users will be able to listen to streamed music (like Pandora, or Spotify). My concern is if I'll need a quick net speed to accomplish this fluidly (current is 10mbps down, 3mbps up), as I want as few listeners as possible to have to face buffering issues. I'll be using a PC (Lenovo Z40, if specifics matter) as the dedicated server to host the music being streamed. Could anyone assist?
  • What's the difference between a cheap router and a good router? Just wanted to know the difference between a cheap router and an expensive router, I know that is a very broad question, I'm just a bit confused on how a router works. Does it increase my Internet speed on multiple devices? I get 50Mb per second, Well at least that's what I pay for. I have a PS3 two iPhones and a tablet, as well as a desktop PC that is wireless. Can anyone recommend an excellent router under $150
  • Turtle Beach M3's: Good for Pc gaming? Like the title says. I used these for Order and Chaos in my iPhone, but the package say you can use these on pc as well… Now, when i tried to use these on Planetside 2, everyone said the couldn't really hear me… Is there special software I should install for this?
  • Good laptop for streaming on JustinTV? I'm looking for a good fast pc that can handle livestreaming nice and smoothly. I need it to be a laptop because I don't have enough room for a desktop. (I already have 2 desktops). I'm wanting to spend about 500 - 1000$. I'm not wanting to spend anymore than $1000 for a windows laptop because I plan on getting a MAC soon for iPhone programming. So could someone please send me a link for a good pc?
