I need to switch phone carriers but my phone is tied with another company
My grandfather died a couple months ago and I got his phone. The phone is tied with Sprint and I want to change to another carrier because Sprint has no service where I live, and I don't want to have to pay for a plan that doesn't have service. The phone has been payed off, so I was wondering how switching to another company works when another company already owns this phone? Would there be a fee to untie the phone with Sprint? I've searched their website and I can't find anything about it, unless I need to contact them.
I'm having trouble figuring it out online which is why I'm asking for help here. Has anyone else gone through this? I know it's possible to switch but I'm not sure how it works. Can someone please explain to me how it works and if it's worth doing it? Any suggestions or advice would be great!
As far as I know, my grandfather didn't have a contract with Sprint. I also have an iPhone 5S.
If you cancel your sprint plan, you can replace the SIM card in the phone with one from a carrier like Verizon, att, or whatever you have in your area. Most offer SIM card kits, where you simply eject the sprint SIM card and replace it with one from your new carrier. Your iPhone will work with the number you're new carrier gives you!
- Would I be able to switch carriers without having to switch phones? I'm with Consumer Cellular and I have an iPhone SE, but I'm thinking of switching carriers so that I can get unlimited data. I don't want to get a new phone because I've had my current one about six months, I really like it, and it works great. I'm not locked into a contract with Consumer Cellular. Would I be able to switch to another carrier without having to purchase a new phone?

- Can I switch phone company's? I have a iPhone 7 from boost. I didn't want it from boost but my parents got it as bday present.boost sucks so much the calls don't work at my house so I can't call in my house or at school. I was thinking of switching to verisoin but I don't know how that will work. Please help because I'm sick not being able to call. And if I do manage to call it's super bad quality.
