If an app has advertisements, does it use data?
I just got my iPhone today. I'm not allowed to use any data though, I used Wi-Fi to download my apps. But if the apps have little advertisements does that mean it uses data?
If you are not allowed then it can't.
Yes ads would be downloaded dynamically to your app, it's relatively small, the apps usually have a fall back operating mode if no connection is available.
There may be utilities to monitor data usage by individual apps, I have seen it on Androids, you can track changes in the data usage report in your control pane, or use an add on App, like this one.
