If an iPhone was bought in another country?

And you bring it to another country to use it but you aren't able to connect it to a mobile service (for data and calls) is it the chip that needs to be changed or the phone?

You'd need a new SIM card probably

The phone needs to be unlocked to accept other carrier's SIMs

The phone has to be unlocked and it can't be a Verizon, Boost Mobile or Sprint version for example, since they use CDMA instead of "GSM" like AT&T or T-Mobile does for example. The majority of the world uses GSM for wireless communication.

You need to change a local SIM card.

  • Will my Iphone 5 work in another country? I'm planning on going to America and need to use my phone. I won't be needing it to call people, just to browse the web and to listen to music. My phone IS unlocked. Will I need to change the sim or get a sim from America? I'm from Australia btw.
  • Will i still be able to use my iphone in another country without jailbreaking? I bought my iphone4 in japan since i was living there for sometime. But I've moved to a different country now. And I want to use the network provided.i'm still using ios4 and i feel like my iphone has been a lot more slower than it used to. Some tell me that in order to use it in a different country i need to jailbreak it but i want to update it to ios5. Will i still be able to use it if I update it to ios5?
  • What does an iphone need in order to work in another country? I'm sending an iphone 4s to brazil to a cousin and want to know if it will work there. Does it need to be unlocked or will an iphone with a clean esn work? Please let me know soon!
  • Turn iPhone to iPod in another country? I'm going on a month long trip to Japan and would like to bring along my iPhone 4 to take pictures with, listen to music, etc. I'm NOT TRYING TO USE IT AS A PHONE TO TALK OR TEXT OR USE DATA. I don't have international services. So I figure I can take out the SIM card and it will be an iPod touch with no services, right? My problem is that I don't want to come home to a big fat surprise bill.
