If I buy an iMac in US, is it gonna be locked?

Hi, I'm from Europe and I'd like to buy an iMac. In US it costs 1,499 dollars, in my country it costs 2,090 dollars which is insane. I'm thinking of buying it in the US. The only questioin is: is the mac gonna be 'locked' like iPhones bought in US?

No

The reason it costs more is because of Value Added Taxes. You'd have to make certain that you wouldn't have to pay those taxes once it come to your country.

The other problem is the warranty. You'd have to ship it back to Apple USA if it breaks. Apple Europe will probably tell you to take a hike. Warranty services are regional.

You'd have to buy a cable that supports the outlet on your wall. NA uses a different cable.

It will work but if something goes wrong then the money you saved is out the window. IMO, it's more trouble than it's worth. There are plenty of younger American citizens who would gladly pay the taxes because they are enthusiastic about supporting their government.

The lock of phones is about telephone companies and rebates to Apple. Telephone wireless is not part of iMac.
You do have three other issues to resolve or consider.
1) Actual cost - USA prices exclude tax. If buying in the USA, you usually have an added State and Local sales tax or a resident usage tax. And then you have to get it from the USA to your country where taken with you often has customs charges and government tax whether through the mail or carried with you There may be exemption of some amount in carrying it. There could be added baggage charges or size for the overhead and checking an extra bag. Overall, consider border taxes and shipping and handling charges.
2) Warranty and damage - Damage in shipping would need resolution, and warranty by Apple needs to be looked up for international coverage. Apple will not sell it on their web site for international shipping. If buying it online to be shipped, you need a reliable seller who will have it properly shipped.
3) Keyboard and power supply. You might buy local versions for extra money, or need to check if the power supply as 120V 60Hz accepts your local power and a plug adapter. The keyboard has US Dollar $ on uppercase 4. Does the keyboard match your country or do you accept or adjust it in some way.

You should also look at models carefully.

so about a 15% difference in graphics processing.

IMacs do not connect to a cell provider and thus there's nothing to lock

Computers aren't locked like phones. There are no carriers involved. For the record not all US bought & sold iPhones are locked to a carrier. I own of those iPhones.

As far as buying the iMac from the US instead of whichever country in Europe you are from, you would also have to factor in shipping costs as well & you'd have to get some European plug in adapter since the US model wouldn't account for that. If after those additions it still ends up being cheaper to buy it from the US, then by all means.

Oh & keep in mind that if you plan to order it from Apple.com, they don't ship outside of the US, much like if the roles were reversed, Apple.com/UK wouldn't ship outside of the UK.

  • Want to buy imac 2013, can you upgrade iOS? I'm looking into buying an iMac as my windows software is slow and outdated. On the iMac can you upgrade the iOS like you can on iPhones? You know when the new iOS comes out and pretty much all iPhone users can upgrade there software, can you do that on the iMac 2013?
  • Is my iPhone gonna be okay now after the water? Ok so march 15th about 75 days ago I dropped my brand new iPhone 4 in a pond. I fell in and my phone was in my pocket. I did the rice and had a blow dryer up to it. The head phone has the red dot as well as the bottom and apple said it was waster damaged. But my phone still works perfect 75 days later. The only thing wrong with it is when in brightness settings if you put it all the way down the screen goes black. Will it be okay now?
  • Is apple gonna step up their game? So a lot of the newer phones are getting better and more advanced than iPhones you could say. Will they start making better things to out do android or will they just fall apart all together?
  • Is apple gonna release the iPhone 5s or iPhone 6 in the WWDC 2013 conference? Is it going to be minor upgrades for the newest edition of the iPhone or a new design and name… Etc
