If I buy an iPhone from the apple store, will I need to get it unlocked?

Or will I just be able to put any sim (contract or pay as you go) and use it?

Added (1). Sorry, I should of clarified this first. When I say 'buy from the apple store' I mean online. So the phone would get shipped to my house, would I be able to use it with my current sim for example straight out the box.

No you will not they will do so when you buy it

Depends on the configuration. You can buy them to be used with a specific carrier or unlocked.

If it is unlocked then you can use any carrier's SIM in it.
If it is locked then you'd be limited to that carrier's SIM cards

Why would I buy an iPhone 4s from Verizon for $449.99 when they're sold on the Apple website for $99?
