If I use Wi-Fi on my iphone 5 will it still use my data?

I just got the iphone five and I'm worried about data usage, under my features on my contract it says data @ $0.05/MB over 500MB. So its not like going over should cost me all too much money, and I'm with telus so I believe I should get a warning message when I'm close to using up all of my data, but I'm still scared I'm going to go over a lot.
And i honestly have no clue how much 500MB of data is… :/
I only really go on facebook, wattpad, siri, and occasionally pinterest or youtube.
If I have it hooked up to my wireless, will it still use up my data?
Is there any way I can check how much data I've used up?
Its on my fathers contract so I can't get on the online account to see, I just give him the money for my bill each month…

Using Wi-Fi = not using data
There's an app you can download to check data usage of you could go online to your account on your providers website to check

You use data on your phone to some degree whenever you are using it. Facebook uses a lot of data as does web browsing depending on the amount of time spent. Only your carrier can tell you if there's an easy way to check usage as they are the provider. 500MB is not a lot of data. It is half a Gig. Yet it may work for you. I'm more than a casual user.

Simple answer: No.

No. If you turn on your home wirless internet it will not use your data becasue it is not your celluar networks data. You are using your own home internet which is already being paid for. So you don't have to worry. But i must warn you that if you use Wi-Fi AND data at the same time expect some insanely rise in charges. To avoid this simply turn OFF your service provider's data network then turn on your Wi-Fi and browse freely as you want. When I'm at home i turn off my data since many apps in the background can use data without me knowing and use Wi-Fi to check email, go thorugh youtube. Speaking of which youtube uses a huge chunk of your data so you may not want to use it to much when your out and about but i suggest waiting til you get home to watch youtube videos through Wi-Fi. You can also download an app which check how much youve used. I suggest 3g watchdog free at Google Play store but part of me think youll gonna pay at the App Store. I find it really useful plus it tracks your Wi-Fi useage as well. Anyways buddy cheers and good luck!

  • Iphone 6. Data and Wi-Fi turned on. Will apps only run on data? Or, will it use Wi-Fi when available? It seems i'm burning through data. I tried turning off data to an app i was using when i had Wi-Fi while cannected to Wi-Fi and continually received a message to ho to settings>Cellular>Cellular Data>Use cellular data for>then a selection of aps like safari, google maps, ap store… With cellular data turned off or if just the app chosen not to use data. I was unable to access when connected to Wi-Fi.
  • If you are using Wi-Fi on an iPhone, do certain tasks use your data plan still? I know using Wi-Fi is very efficient to slow down your data plan usage, but does it completely eliminate using data out of a monthly data plan on phones or does it just cover part of your everyday tasks? Say I was on Wi-Fi and watched videos all the time, downloaded apps all the time, etc. And I was also under Verizon 4g. Would the Wi-Fi completely cover all of that browsing and usage or would any of the data "leak" from my data plan?
