Iphone 5 activation and ESN?

I bought an used iphone 5 through Craigslist for relatively cheap.

It's not perfect cosmetically, but fully functioning. When I was buying this phone we had some issues, well, I think I had some issue with the seller. He seemed not that trustworthy; however, I ended up buying it since verzion staff told me that this phone has clean ESN, and is deactivated. So I activated the phone with my number, and it is working right now.

Although he said it's his, but what if it's a stole phone, and THE REAL OWNER reports as "stolen", What is the outcome? And what could happen to me?

You would have to give it back of course. You would not get in trouble though because it was a legitimate purchase thru a paper or other source. The seller now would get in trouble but not you. I wouldn't worry too much though because if it hasn't been reported stolen by now it probably isn't. When stolen the ESN number is placed on a blacklist and they can't be activated. Thats all!

  • What is ESN stand for and what does it mean? I'm trying to sell a iphone so i was trying to average out the price.people state bad ESN and stuff like that. So i need to know what it is. And when you answer don't say anything that involves CDMA ensles you identify what that is too.
  • What does it mean if an iPhone has a bad ESN and can I buy it? My iPhone 5s was stolen and Verizon as usual is not taking any pity from anyone nor would they offer me a replacement at a discount so if I want the replacement I would have to buy it at full price. I looked online on ebay and saw some iPhone 5s that were really cheap selling but when I look it says bad ESN. I read somewhere that you can't activate this with your provider is that is the case. Is this true and what exactly is bad ESN on an iPhone?
  • What does Clean ESN, ready for activation on swappa or ebay mean? I'm about to buy an iPhone that's new and also listed as Clean ESN, ready for activation. I know that means i can activate it with the carrier its locked to which is AT&T but can i use online unlocking service like iunlockpro or any another one to unlock it so that i can use it with any GSM? Or is this only for the carrier its locked to since it new? thanks. the carrier is Sprint not AT&T
  • Should i buy a bad esn iphone and use it with gsm carrier? I wanna buy myself an iphone 4s from ebay. I live in bosnia and we only have GSM carriers. I noticed that verizon or sprint "bad esn" iphones are much cheaper so, should i buy that phone and unlock it to my network or should i gather more money and buy myself a new factory unlocked one?
