IPhone 5 GB usage is almost full even with few things on my phone?

I've had my iPhone for a little over a few months and I'm wondering why I have very little storage space available. Only over a few GB's. I have the the 16 GB iPhone 5 and have litterally NO songs, just a total of 12 basic apps, none use up more than 1 GB. I've deleted all of my message conversations. I have 20 Notes… Ill just say this, I don't have much on my phone at all. But my buddy has a 16 GB iPhone 4 with over 200 songs, way more apps then me. The same amount of pics and videos (and no my videos aren't long videos, just a few couple minute videos) and He still has FIVE WHOLE GB's of storage space available. Does anyone know why this is? Why doesn't my iPhone have that much space left to use even though I don't have much on my phone? When I saw my buddy had like 4 pages of apps I was like "WHAT? HOW you GET All THEM APPS" I barely have one page of apps.
