IPhone doesn't tell me who called after I turn phone back on?

I did an experiment, I called my Iphone using my home phone while it was off to see if my iPhone would tell me if I received a call once I turn it back on. It doesn't tell me If someone was trying to call unless they leave a voice mail (I have the same problem when the phone is on airplane mode) Is it a problem with my phone or are all the cell phones like that?
