Iphoto won't recognize iphone?

So i plug in my iphone 4s to iphoto so i can upload pictures, but instead of recognizing it as "my iphone" (that is the name of it) it comes up at "apple iphone" none of the photos show up there are just a bunch of squares with dotted lines around them which usually are unloaded pictures. The pictures never load. I tried using the app image capture that comes on the mac but that is doing the same thing.
