Is it bad to jailbreak an iPhone?

I've wanted to jail break my iphone 4 for a while now. My mother says she "forbids" me to do so, because it'll mess up my phone. Is it as bad as people make it seem? I've read that you'll lose your data and during the process it can go terribly wrong.

Yes.

Bad. Good mom. Yes. Yes.

If you know what your doing then its ok. You got to know that it will void your warranty.
