Both, you want as many options as possible, to recover anything that you consider important to you on the phone.
So if you can use services like Photobucket, Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, Google Drive, your computer, flash drives or an external hard drive, then I say go for it. If your pictures, text and emails are not important, don't bother backing them up. But don't freak out when they get lost for any reason. Because every phone is just one puddle, toilet, sidewalk or zombie roller coaster with a triple loop ride, from getting lost, stolen or destroyed.
I prefer the iTunes backup over the iCloud one.

- When you restore your iphone, does it wipe out everything from your itunes? I understand that it will wipe out everything from your physical iphone, but i was wondering if it would wipe out everything on your itunes account to, such as music.
- May I delete everything on my iphone 4s once everything had been transfer to icloud? I have been a iphone user for almost three years and I'm going to trade in my 4s to get the iphone 5. Right now, I'm starting to figure out icloud work and it's a little bit confusing. So I want to know if it's okay if I can delete everything once my contacts, photos, and other stuff had been transfer? Because I do not want to lose my stuff and never get it back!
- If I restore everything to iCloud on my iphone, can I restore everything and get it all back? I have too many things on my iphone right now, and I was wondering if I can restore it and get everything back from ICloud
