Is it dangerous in the Bronx for tourists?

I'm going to New York and going to the bronx. Is it dangerous for tourists? I'm planning to go to the Bronx zoo. I heard people say don't flash out your iphone or you get jumped, but what happens if i want to take a picture or call someone? Can i get robbed easily? Also how can i act city-smart? How much money should i bring when i'm there? How do i walk safely at night time or ride on the subway at night?

I don't think that too much crime happens at the zoo. I think that you would be safe calling or taking a picture. Try not to do that just before you leave in case some opportunist sees that and follows you out.

When you leave, i recommend that you leave by the Bronxdale Gate as the neighborhood is a bit nicer on that side of the park. As you go past the entry point and come to the auto road, turn left and walk straight out of the park, a couple of hundred yards or so. As you exit the park, turn left and follow it a couple of blocks until you get to Fordham Road. That is the ten lane boulevard that you will encounter as soon as you go around the bend in the road, which, by the way, is known as Bronx Park East, or possibly Boston rOAD. To the right you will see an overhead train. Go to that and take the downtown trai, which will take you into Manhattan. Times Square is about twenty five minutes away.

As afr as safety goes, walk like you know where you are going. Know the directions ahead of time. The ones I gave you are very simple, but know them. Buy your Metrocard ahead of time so that you don't have to fumble around with that. Ride the train in the car where the conductor is mid-train. Do not engage anyone in conversation, take your wallet or money out for any reason, nor expose your iPhone on the train.
