Is it possible to have no data plan on an iPhone?
I have a non smartphone right now. If i buy an unlocked iPhone, can i transfer the sim card from my phone to the iPhone and just pay the $10/month and not have a data plan. (just have talk and text)

That is possible. On an unlocked iPhone you can use any sim card.
Based on what you're saying as far as price wise goes, I would assume you have AT&T. With that being said, their system scans for iPhones on the network without a data plan. Anytime you call customer service, they can see what phone your sim card is in immediately on their screen.
What I'm getting at is that since their network does a scan once every month/week or so, it will automatically add a data plan, weather or not you're in contract or it's locked to a network or whatever. They're isn't any way around it, sadly. Even if you call customer service, they can remove the data plan but if you wait a week it will be added back on again.
Honestly, I would say to just get the data plan. If you don't want it, then don't bother with the iPhone.

Regarding prepaid iPhones, the cheapest plan that I'm aware is around 40-45 dollars per month. These plans typically include talk, text and data.
