Is it possible to patent a concept of a released product?

To elaborate, let's rewind about 10 years and say that Steve Jobs was releasing the first iPhone with a touchscreen that turns in the direction that the phone is handled.

Could it have been possible to patent the concept of operating a screen by touching it, and the concept of the screen turning to face whichever the direction the device is turned so as to prevent competitors from duplicating their own product that does the same basic thing, just under another brand with another operating system?

This is what I have noticed about the IT industry--anytime someone comes out with a popular item that is selling at a high rate, competitor begin duplicating the product with a modifed version of their own. How does one stop a competitor from mimicking their product?

No you can't patent a "concept."

All you end up doing is spending millions and that strategy only works on poor people.

  • Why is apple so successful even when their product is not that revolutionary? Whenever apple comes with a product, a whole bunch of people try to preorder it. I have no problem with apple what so ever. How do they manage to get people to buy their things even when they are not the best out there? I mean the iphone 5 is like a book with a different cover. The newest ipad is the same thing. Do you think apple needs to make any changes to the hardware? To me, they have to change their operating system. People are tired of just swiping.
  • What's the difference from an OEM product and an original product? I need a new charger for my iPhone and I don't know if I should go buy an OEM charger from eBay or go buy an actual apple charger from Walmart that's going to be way more expensive. Since OEM is basically the same thing without retail packaging, would there be a difference in quality?
  • What does jailbreaking an apple product mean? I have heard about people who jailbreak their iphones or ipads or ipods and i have always wondered what that means as i don't have an iphone just an ipod which i'm pretty happy with. Just curious Thanks but how does it break it? Does it load a virus on it or can you not load it anymore. I also have heard of peoples apple products stop working after awhile but i never understood how exactly
  • Is it possible to buy an iphone and NOT have to buy the plan? Is this possible and how? I'm trying to convince my parents to buy me an iPhone, but which one do I buy and can it be used without the plan for $40 or $30? All my friends keep saying different things and iim afraid the store will just sell me the expensive one.
