Is jailbreaking your iPhone illegal?

Didn't some law pass recently about unlocking phones? Once your contract is up just call the carrier and they will unlock the phone for you.

It violates your contractual agreement, making it a tort (a civil crime)

Afaik, no it isn't.

what is illegal is refusing to pay the contract under which you 'bought' the phone.

so -- you'd have an iPhone for which you have to buy a data contract from someone at some price [or its useless], PLUS you still get to pay off the existing ATT/Verizon or whoever contract over the remaining part of the two year life of that contract at the $125 a month minimum charge [or whatever it is].

sounds like a smart financial move ok. Lol

October 2012 law passed making it illegal to unlock tablet pc's, phones remain untouched. The future seems to hold some action against unlocking phones to switch carriers.

  • Is jailbreaking an iPhone 4s the same as unlocking (supposedly illegal now)? I'm an Android user so if I'm not using the correct terms then I apologize. I've read that jailbreaking an iPhone 4s has it's advantages. So is jailbreaking similar to unlocking or to rooting (Android)? Also, if an iPhone is "jailbroken" can it be updated to iOS 7 or does it have to be returned to its original state?
  • Is it illegal to record a conversation with someone if it was in your own home? Pretty much my house was burglarized yesterday I had a suspicion of who it may be. Today that person came to my house and pretty much made a full confession I was recording him on my iPhone. Is this evidence usable? He also brought back one item that had been stolen is that usable as evidence?
