Is my Wi-Fi router bad or is it my laptop?

I've had my laptop: Asus G750JW, for about two weeks now and it keeps dropping the wi-fi connection. My router is a linksys WRT54G2 and yes the firmware is out of date and downloading a dd-wrt seems like a hassle. The main computer that is using the router doesn't drop connection (hard wire), nor does any of my devices: iphone/ipad. I recently went to my friends house to test his Wi-Fi to see if it's my laptop or router. Everything was working fine for about two hours, then I got off and came back 30 minutes later and saw that the connection was limited. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the network adapter on the laptop, but that doesn't solve the issue. So i'm curious if it's my router or if it's my laptop.

Added (1). Also, if I were to connect via Ethernet cable, would any of this matter?

Since the laptop is new, it looks like a compatibility issue. I suggest you try upgrading your router's firmware.

Follow the steps mentioned below and check if the issue still persists.
Safe mode with Networking
I would suggest you to boot in "Safe mode with Networking"and check if the issue still persists.
a) Restart the computer.
b) Start tapping the F8 key.
c) You will get Advanced Boot Options Screen.
d) Select the option "Safe mode with Networking"

  • What's the difference between a cheap router and a good router? Just wanted to know the difference between a cheap router and an expensive router, I know that is a very broad question, I'm just a bit confused on how a router works. Does it increase my Internet speed on multiple devices? I get 50Mb per second, Well at least that's what I pay for. I have a PS3 two iPhones and a tablet, as well as a desktop PC that is wireless. Can anyone recommend an excellent router under $150
  • Using laptop as a wireless router So i have a laptop in my dorm currently connected to the internet through a wired connection however, there's no Wi-Fi in the building, so how can i use laptop as a sort of router. I want to be able to use Wi-Fi on my iphone so how can i trun my lptop into router ofthe sorts
  • Asus laptop stopped connecting to the wireless router? We know it is not the router because the HP Notebook works and our iPhones work. When Windows runs a detection for errors it reports none. We have unplugged everything a few times, have hit FN F2 nothing. The only message we get is to call a friend who might know how to fix it!
  • Laptop won't connect to internet through router? I set up my new linksys n300 router and I can successfully connect to the internet through the Wi-Fi on my iphone but on my laptop, I get an exclamation point symbol. Troubleshooting the problem says its a problem with my access point but seeing as how the Wi-Fi works on my phone, I'm not sure this is the case. How can I fix this?
