Is texting or calling from iPhone to iPhone free if you're in a different country?

I live in the US And I'm going to Sydney, Australia for 3 weeks in a little while but I'll only be 17 when I go with one of my friends and I wanted to make sure I could communicate with my mom. There aren't many hotels I can find with free Wi-Fi or even Wi-Fi in general. The hotel we're probably going to stay in only offers wired. Both my mom and I have iPhone's so if we text or call on the cell phone data (I have Verizon) will my phone bill price be crazy high?

Check with Verizon to see if international calls are included in your plan. Most plans don't include that, but check to make sure.

I'm not 100% sure about calls, but texting is free as long as both you and the person you are texting are on a Wi-Fi connection. Phone calls may work the same way, but I know for sure that Face Time is also free if both parties are on a Wi-Fi connection. If neither, or only one of you are on a Wi-Fi connection, the texts, calls, and Face Time will incur standard voice, data, and messaging rates.

Not calls, but texting is because you are sending imessages and facetime is free also. You would need Wi-Fi though unless you have international cell tower access.

Yes. You will be charged for roaming fees as well as long distance fees for calling and texting. It can be really expensive. You best bet is to find a place that has Wi-Fi and use their wireless internet. Otherwise if you use the data internet plan then you will be a expensive bill for using your internet in another country. You can use many free apps for calling and texting such as Viber, , Textfree, Skype through Wi-Fi. You can also use Facetime through the iphones for free using Wi-Fi.

Call verizon, they might have some insight for you.

Yes the bill will be high since you would have to be roaming when trying to make those calls/texts. IPhone to iPhone calls/texts are not free anyway you put it. Same costs as with any phone to phone.

Unless you are mistaking FaceTime audio (calls) & iMessage (text) which they are actually VoIP (calls) & I'm (text) & require of course a Wi-Fi connection to work (for free).
