Is there a problem with texting someone in a different country?

So this person and I are both from the US and have American phone numbers. We both have iPhones so it's iMessage. This person is currently in another country on vacation. We're texting now, but I'm worried if any charges will occur

To be honest with iMessage it's almost impossible to tell! If you are both connected to Wi-Fi then there should be no charges. But if one of you is connected to the phone network then either or one or even both of you may get charged. While you are in this situation you would be better off using a third party app that you know only uses Wi-Fi!

  • Will T-Mobile charge me extra for texting out of the country? One of my friends is in Egypt. She texted me last night and I hesitated to reply because I was afraid that they would charge me like $20 since its Egypt. I ended up replying once and now i'm afraid. My mom will kill me if they charge a lot. However, I have unlimited texting and she texted me from an app which is from the iphone i think… Will they charge me?
  • Will my iPhone 5 work in a different country? It's an iPhone 5, and I live in NZ. We're going on a trip to America for a couple of weeks, and I don't know if my phone will work. I don't care if I can't text or make phone calls, or about roaming or whatever with Vodafone. I just want to make sure I can use Wi-Fi like usual. Obviously the camera and iPod parts will work? But what about Internet? Cheers.
  • Will data be charged for texting and calling outside the country to another iphone? My girlfriend is going to costa rica for the summer and i need to know will me calling and texting her use up my date. It would be facetime audio and imessage only. Also i have att if that matters.
  • When in a contract, can I get a different SIM while in another country? I'm going to china in 15 days and I want an IPhone so I can take pictures and have data while I'm there. I'm staying for an entire month. Getting this IPhone (with either sprint or T-mobile) with put me in a 2 year contract. Will I be able to use my phone while I'm there with the new SIM card I'm buying in China. I heard that my phone will be locked while I'm out of the country or something.
