Is there an inexpensive way to develop an app?

I'm a college student with a few ideas for iPhone apps that I would like to release. The only problem is that the cost for developing one seems to be a little on the high side for me and is money I don't really have at the moment (I have less than $500 saved up). Does anyone have any recommendations on what would be the most inexpensive way to develop a quality app for IPhones and Android devices?

Android is already inexpense. You just need a computer, java sdk and some knowledge about java.

Well the cheapest way would be to
1) Buy a book on Objective C, do some research and find one that's right for you
2) Get a Mac - if you don't have one then you can use VMWare and install Mac OSX Leopord 10.6.8
3) Install xCode (free)
4) Read the book, learn how to program in Objective C (takes about a one full dedicated year)
5) Sign up for the apple's developed agreement, cost is $99 per year
6) Code your application, plan / engineer it out
7) When done, submit it to Apple for validation, set the price etc so maybe around $1-$2 per download
8) If it's accepeted it will be on the App Store for other users to download

Total Cost = About $129
Average cost of developing an iPhone app = $6800

Are there any good deals for the big name brands (verizon, at&t, sprint, etc.) I also checked out some of the cheap brands like virgin mobile and criKet, but virgin mobile doesn't have iphone 5's and criKet costs almost 500 dollars for a iphone 5. Any brand recommendations? 5 points to best answer! ANy advice is greatly appreciated!
  • How to get legal permission to develop an app for a site? I have been reading some requests on a site called poptropica, and a lot of people want it on iPhone. I know I have enough coding-digital art skills to make it, but how do I get permission from the developers to do so? Would they likely officially hire me?
