Consumer Reports puts the iPhone6 to the bend test
September 29, 2014

Apple has been taking a lot of heat with reports that its new iPhone 6 phones bend under pressure. Consumer Reports wanted to bring some science to the matter to find how much force it takes for the iPhone 6 to bend and not bend back.

Consumer Reports took one sample each of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus along with other comparably-sized competitors into its labs for stress testing. Using a special Instron machine, testers apply force to the phones until they deform.

It turns out, it takes a lot of force to permanently bend one of the new iPhones - and all the other phones tested for that matter.

Even the phones that bent first - the iPhone 6 and the HTC One M8 - took 70 pounds of force before bending permanently.

The iPhone 6 Plus took more punishment at 90 pounds. The smaller, thicker iPhone 5 outperformed both in the tests, with no noticeable deformation until 130 pounds.

Apple said they have only received only 9 on this reports.

  • Will my bent iPhone affect performance? Some friends and I were screwing around and my iPhone 6 got bent. The screen didn't crack, but it is popping out slightly. I've since put my phone in a lifeproof case. If I keep it in the lifeproof, will the performance be fine, and will the bend get worse?
  • Will AT&T take a bent iphone 5 trade in? I have a bent iphone 5 (don't ask me how, google it, happening to a lot of people). Wondering if AT&T will take it as a trade in for a new phone? If so does anyone know how much? I know in perfect condition they offer 300$ trade in, but I'm sure they're going to take a nice chunk off for it (if they'll take it at all)
  • What should I do if apple won't do anything about my bent iphone 6? I had recently bought the iphone 6. Less than a month from the purchase date, the phone ended up bending causing the screen to be damaged and not functional. This was not a forceful bend meaning i did NOT do this on purpose by any means. Apple doesn't seem to want to do anything and i think it would be fair to have the phone replaced. What should i do?
  • My iphone charger cable is bent I was just sitting in my room charging my phone when it stopped charging. I moved my phone to a different position, and it started charging again. Then I moved it back, and it stopped charging again. Please help because I need my phone for babysitting jobs and it won't charge. **NOTE** I tried charging my phone through my computer, and it won't work.
