Is unlocking an AT&T IPhone 5 cheaper the buying a factory unlocked iPhone 5?

Well first of all I want to know of I went to the apple store and bought an iPhone 5 for At&T then went on to unlock it for my tmobile service would I be saving money NOT buying a regular factory unlocked iPhone 5 or is my plan useless

Yes, factory unlocking your iPhone after (buying it unlocked) is always more cost effective than buying it unlocked. It usually adds value to your iPhone. Many online providers can unlock it for your like iPhoneUnlockedCheap.com or others.

The following takes into consideration the iPhone 5, 16GB. The final cost, of course, will be determined by the actual model and capacity desired.

Let's look at the facts, if purchasing from Apple's web site:

iPhone 5 (16GB) - AT&T - 2 year contract required, costs: $199
iPhone 5 (16GB) - Contract free and unlocked, costs: $649

Please note that Apple's web site clearly and specifically states the following regarding the $199 iPhone 5: "AT&T Account, 2-year contract required".

Taking that into consideration, if you purchase the $199 iPhone 5, enter into a contract with AT&T and thereafter cancel your contract with AT&T in order to use T-Mobile, you will pay an Early Termination Fee (ETF), plus other fees that will total in EXCESS of $600. This does not take into consideration the frustration factor of paperwork, phone calls, etc., etc.

All things considered, using the above scenario, it will be cheaper for you to purchase an iPhone 5 contract free and unlocked rather than the other option.

If you purchase an iPhone 5 contract free and unlocked, there will be no need to use an unlocking web site service at all as the iPhone will already be factory unlocked.

Hope this helps!

  • Would I be cheaper buying lots of singles from iTunes or a portable CD player and a bunch of CDs? I don't really like whole albums of songs and on iTunes they are so expensive about £1.00 per song and there's so many I want! I need them for work next week as I work very long hours and often the radio is turned off at Christmas time for being "offensive" Should I purchase a cheap player and lots of CD's? Or should I buy lots of loose songs and put them on my iPhone? I don't have much money at the moment.
  • Will buying an iphone in contract and unlocking cause contract immediate fee? If i buy a iphone for example on att contract and unlock it, will att charge me what's left on the contract or will i just go by like nothing happened and free of contract? I haven't seen this but it makes quite a bit of sense for companies… Not sure if they do however.
  • Will an unlocked iphone 4S work for tmobile if it isn't factory unlocked? I want to get an iPhone 4S and my friend has the iPhone 4 unlocked but i'm worried that if i get it non-factory unlocked it won't work. My uncle tried to do it a couple of months ago and apple said that if it was factory unlocked every time the phone shut off or died it would reset. I was just wondering if the same thing would happen if it wasn't factory unlocked? So if I get it unlocked everytime it will shut off it will reset? That is what i'm worried about.
  • Why is the unlocked iPhone 5s cheaper on apple.com? I've been looking for an unlocked iPhone 5s, but I'm seeing different prices. On apple.com, a 16gb unlocked iphone is $650. On amazon its $800. Why are the prices different? And from which site should I buy from?
