Itunes says i have updated software when i actually don't?

I have an Iphone 3 and it has software version 4.2.1.im trying to update to 6.0 but when i try to update it in Itunes it says i have the most current version. So i'm wanting to know how to fix this problem.

Added (1). Then how can i download apps that need a more updated ios version than what i have?

Iphone 3's only have the capability of going to 4.2.1

This is the same for my ipod 2nd generation which were released around the same time with the same hardware.

The only devices that can get ios 6 are the Iphone 3gs… Iphone 4/s… Iphone 5… Ipod 4th and 5th gen… ALSO: Not all features are compatible with some of these devices (example. Siri can't be added to the 4th generation ipod, only the fifth)

Sorry, you are out of luck.

Because you have an iPhone 3 it won't allow anything post 4.2.1 unfortunately. Both the iPhone original and iPhone 3 are no longer hardware or software supported by Apple. If you need to get anything fixed they'll even replace it with a 3GS!

But unfortunately it leaves you in a bit of a pickle for downloading those applications. At this point you really can only work with what you have. Because the AppStore only shows the latest version even if there are old versions that work you can't get them directly.

One of the best routes you have on this one is to jailbreak your device and then download the applications through installulous.

Best of luck.
