ITunes sync for movies? What does it mean?

If I buy a movie from the official apple online store, it will definitely show up on my Mac iPhone and ipad. But if I buy a DVD from the store or VCD from my old collection, will the video be upgraded in terms of resolution to 1080p? Will these movies be automatically available as downloads on my ipad and iPhone?

If not what is the iTunes sync for movies for? What does it do?

Added (1). So if I get the file like tomandjerry.mp4 and throw it to iTunes Match on Mac, will it auto sync on my ipad?

I doubt it. Especially old ones. On a small screen its unlikely the human eye can resolve the differnce between a 720P image and 1080. The human eye only sees color in large areas.

1080P is best watched on widescreen Tvs or projectors over 40"

Q: "if I buy a DVD from the store"
A: The iTunes Store does not sell DVDs. They only sell software, no hard media (a DVD is a plastic disc). If you mean buy a DVD from a brick-and-mortar shop down the street, nothing about that DVD can be changed. The data is burned into plastic. Even so, iTunes Match is for music, not movies.

Q: "what is the iTunes sync for movies for?"
A: Never heard of it. I searched at apple.com, and no results described anything with the name "iTunes sync for movies". Did you read something on some blog about this?

Q: "if I get the file like tomandjerry.mp4 and throw it to iTunes Match"
A: How would you "get" this file? Movies sold at the iTunes Store are in the format moviename.m4v. You can't "THROW" any movie file to iTunes Match. You "throw" music to iTunes Match.

Zh93. Yes, once you convert your own DVD or VCD to mp4 video, you can add it into iTunes and sync your iPad with iTunes, the video will be sync to your iPad automatically. If you don't know how to convert DVD to mp4 on Mac, this step by step guide will help you a lot.
