Looking to build a solid sound system?

I'm looking to build a solid sound system for my apartment this year. My budget is ~$500 however I don't really have an idea as to what to look for. I was pointed in the direction of a passive speaker, a sub woofer, and a powered amplifier.

I have been looking around and saw a speaker/sub woofer deal on Soundelectronix…

I definitely want a loud system that can produce bass that shakes the apartment (most music played is dance music/rap)… I was wondering what amplifier I should purchase that would power these two, but if these two products aren't great, I would be open to other suggestions. I would prefer the amp having Bluetooth connectivity for iPhones/Laptops etc.

Well, your budget is rather low if you expect it to 'shake your apartment'. By at least one order of magnitude.

And, anyone looking at using DJ speakers at home not only doesn't understand good audio at all, and is also throwing their money away on what they don't need. DJ speakers are, first and foremost, rugged, to deal with the frequent loading and off loading going from one gig to another. They sacrifice good sound quality for that ruggedness. If you're buying for your home, you have no need of that.

You need to look at some sites that sell proper home audio gear, such as Amazon.com and Newegg.com. Look at proper home audio speakers and proper home audio receivers. At your price point, buying an amp, instead of a receiver, is not worth it. My main retro audio system does split the receiver job into separate tuner, power amp, and preamp, but the value of just those three pieces is around $2,500.

And, you can't do stereo sound without having a pair of stereo speakers.

Look at Infinity, Polk, JBL, and Klipsch, to name four good speaker brands. Look at Denon, Harman Kardon, Yamaha and Pioneer, again, to name four good receiver brands.
