My iPhone 4s Audio Jack isn't working?

I have had my iPhone 4s since November 2012, about a month ago my audio jack suddenly stopped working.

I have cleaned it out, i have tried different headphones, I've tried everything!

My phone just doesn't pick up that there are headphones in the jack.

People have said to go on iTunes and restore it back to original settings, but i don't have my own computer, only my brothers and i don't want to lose all my photos, contacts etc.

I also am only 14 turning 15, so i don't have any money to take it to apple and ask them because I'm not able to dish out a lot of money at the moment, or however much it costs.

Can anyone help. I've tried everything

That happened to my ipod a while back… I wrapped a little tin foil around my headphones port plug in and it worked.

Mine got dirt/lint in it, we cleaned it with alcohol and it worked again., but beware our battery exploded recently.

Hardware issue… Restoring through iTunes will not fix anything at all. Your phone is out of warranty so it would cost a bunch to repair it. Not sure of the exact price. Just buy bluetooth headphones

What most people won't say that for your problem it is a very easy fix and will cost you a maximum of $20 for all equipment. Well, at least where I'm from but if you live in the US the things needed will be much less.

Firstly as others have suggested, restore it. Just backup your phone with iTunes so all your data is saved and then restore it. This will then at least give you an idea on whether it is a software issue or a hardware issue.

If the problem is not fixed, follow the advise below the success rate of fixing your phone via these steps is very high. You really do not need to be a big hardware geek or anything. There's no need to send to a repair shop as an iPhone 4S is an easy phone to fix. I'm a year younger than you (13 turning 14) and I started repairing phones when I was around 10. Trust me on this it is not that difficult in fact I'm more of a software guy than a hardware guy. Originally I was hopeless at fixing phones from the hardware side but Youtube really helped.

1) Buy a Pentalobe screwdriver. From where I'm from, that costs $2.30 including shipping from a local seller online. It will cost even cheaper since you are living in the States. You need this screwdriver, you can't open an iPhone 4S without one.

2) Cleaning it will not fix it. You need to clean it with alcohol but not any alcohol, it is best if you use isopropyl alcohol. This is alcohol and its intended use is on electrical components. This costs $10 for me for you if you live in the States, again it is cheaper.

3) Remove the back glass. It is a very simple procedure, remove two screws on the bottom of phone and slide up. You will now see different components in the phone.

4) Disassemble the headphone jack and clean it with a cotton bud and isopropyl alcohol. Follow a simple youtube procedure on iPhone 4S dis-assembly. Then clean the headphone jack and also look for any corrosion or dirt on the motherboard. Clean any corrosion or dirt with a cotton bud using isopropyl alcohol.

5) Test whether the headphone jack is working. If it is working reassemble if not, go to step 6.

The step below this should be a sure fix. If it does not work it means there must be some problem with the motherboard and that is a very expensive fix but if you have not dropped it hard or the phone has not received water damage, it should be good and the motherboard will probably not need fixing.

6) Buy a new headphone jack component. For me this costs approximately $6.75… If you live in the States, this will be even cheaper. Replace the old headphone jack component with the new headphone jack component. Check if it is working now, it should work.

Total: $19.05
(Should be cheaper if you live in the States.)

  • Why isn't my iPhone headphone jack not working? My not even a month old iPhone 6s headphone jack isn't working. I will plug in my headphones and the sound isn't being played in the headphones and is still playing as it should without anything plugged in, I have tried other earbuds and headphones but they do the same. Does anyone know what's wrong?
  • What type of signal do iPhone audio jack accessories use? So what do they use? A modulated signal like a modem, data pulses, or something else. Is it different for each device? Examples would be a debit card reader or a robot remote (I saw it on think geek).
  • USB/Audio Jack isn't working on my laptop? I think it's when I was carrying it the other day up to my room and my family member opened the door, it caught the side of the laptop bashing it… The USB port for my mouse doesn't work right and the audio socket only plays out of one earphone. It's not the earphones because I tried them on my iphone/ipod. So it's what happened. What can I do about this?
  • Something trapped in my iPhone audio jack? I recently had my iPhone in the pocket of a new jacket which I didn't realise had a burst packet of silica beads in it. Now one of them is trapped at the bottom of my audio jack where my headphones go in. Does anyone have any idea how to try and get it out?
