My iPhone 4s has recently recovered from water damage, will i experience some issues?

My iPhone 4s was dropped in a pool last weekend, two days after it recovered and was working like normal. Today i started experiencing some problems with the speakers, they tend to work and then not work and then work again. I was wondering what will be some consequences or other issues i might experience and how to solve my speaker problem.

Yes, you might want to out rice in there before it rusts

Unfortunately, water damage is a tricky beast. There may be multiple parts of the handset that were damaged and corrosion will make it worse in the long run.

Water damage isn't covered by the warranty and it's extremely easy to spot for an engineer. If you have handset insurance you may need to use this. Check your bank account if you didn't take insurance with the handset.

Finally, Apple offer a replacementt service for their iPhones if water damaged or otherwise. I believe the replacement fee is around £150. You should book an appointment online with your closest Apple store.

When phones are liquid damaged they are classed as BER (beyond economic repair).

The inside of a phone is made up of metal parts and circuit boards - meaning the liquid will slowly corrode and rust them. As this can sometimes be a slow process (depending on how much liquid got in the phone) this is why some phones appear to work for a while after getting wet. But they will eventually fail as the corrosion inside stops them working. This is what is slowly happening to your iPhone.

Some tips you may read/be given such as putting it in rice or in the airing cupboard may work in the short term, but the phone will stop working and is irreparable as the inside of the phone will corrode.

If you have insurance on your phone you would be able to claim through it, or maybe you can claim through a home insurance policy. Any type of liquid damage is not covered under the manufacturers warranty.

If you have no insurance plans then I'm afraid your only option is to buy a new phone.

You will probably find that your SIM card and memory card are ok if removed from the phone promptly after the damage occurs.

If the SIM is damaged you can get a free of charge replacement from your network. If the memory card is damaged, unfortunately you won't be able to retrieve its data but you can replace memory cards with new ones.

  • My iphone has water damage? - 1 I dropped my iphone 4 in the sink and it was literally in there for two seconds but none of the speakers work. The phone still works perfectly but i can't even talk on the phone because i can't hear anything. I know the apple insurance that i have doesn't cover water damage but how much would it cost me to have it fixed? Will they give me a whole new phone or just fix it?
  • My iphone 4 has water damage I have an iPhone 4 that has been water damaged. I do not have apple care or apple insurance. I have assurion insurance, but I had a 60 day claim notice. Unfortunately, the claim expired so they can't help me. If i take my phone to the apple store, will they replace it for the out of warranty cost of $149?
  • My iphone 4 has water damage and won't turn on? My water bottle leaked and even though only a few drops of water got on my phone, it won't turn on. I'm immersing it in rice right now, but in case that doesn't work can I take it to the Genius bar? The two external water damage indicators are not red and my phone looks normal. Would they be able to tell anyway? Are there any other remedies other than rice I can use?
  • Iphone water indicators not pink, still possible water damage? Hypothetically, if you got your iphone 4s wet, but the water indicators are not triggered at all, is it still possible the phone has water damage on the inside that apple would find if they took it apart?
