The iPhone can only sync apps videos music and photos via iTunes. You should be able to transfer photos from the iphone to the laptop. Plug in the iPhone it should be recognised as an external drive. Click on the drive and Navigate through the folders until you get to the photos where you can copy them off.
If you need other data such as documents you need to use icloud or similar
Laptop may need software from the iTunes store .it should be free
