My IPhone screen went black?

So, I've dropped my phone a couple of times and this time it turned black. My mom took it away and then when i got it back, it wouldn't turn on. I've tried 3 strategies charging it, holding the power button, and holding both the home button and the sleep button at the same time. They didn't work. And I can't try connecting it to itunes because my mac computer is out of date and it won't let me update itunes or update the computer itself. What do I do?

Added (1). I also know it still works because when i plug it in to charge it vibrates and also when i hold down the home button, voice control comes on. It is an iPhone 4g by the way if that's important.

Added (2). I also don't have a apple store near me. And my mom doesn't want to go through spending money on it if it is 'broken'

If the iPhone is vibrating and voice control is coming on then the iPhone is not off. When you dropped it, the backlight might have broken. You can have it inspected in an Apple Store to see if they can repair the backlight.
