My Wi-Fi reaches one half of my room but not the other?

Basically, I have my router in the hallway which is about 2 metres from my living room, in the entrance of the room and about 2 metres in you get perfect signal on my iphone and ipad but any further and it does not connect, surely this is a fault? Also my laptop will connect anywhere in my living room, i assume as it is a bigger, stronger device but often loses and regains connection. My laptop does not get Wi-Fi in 2 of the upstairs rooms. I know certain spots to sit to get connection on my ipad and phone but surely this isn't right, I should be receiving connection all over my house not to mention about 6 metres away from the router! Is this a fault? Or just the way it works, should I change provider? (Currently with Sky), or any tips on how to extend range without buying anything?

You can try moving your router. Even a few feet might make a difference. Move the antennas. But the only long term solution is different hardware. Borrow a friend's laptop. See if it gets better reception. Or invest in a new router.
