No service message on iPhone while abroad?

I'm on Orange in the UK, and have arrived in America today however I can't get any service on my iPhone 4, I have tried turning it off and on again, manually choosing the service but it can't connect, as well as reseting the network settings but it's still not working. My friend is on Vodafone and hers came up automatically when she switched her phone back on after the flight… Has anyone got any ideas on how to get mine to work?

Have you tried putting it on aircraft mode? When you switch aircraft mode off it should connect to the local equivalent network. I'm on O2 and I used this method successfully in Ireland.

  • Will I be charged if I receive an oncoming call while traveling abroad? I'm traveling abroad and taking my iPhone. I don't have an international package so I'm not planning on making any calls or sending messages. However, what if someone calls me instead? What will happen if I ignore the call and let it go straight to voicemail? Will I get charged for it?
  • What to do with iPhone while travelling abroad? I'm going to Italy for vacation and I want to bring my iPhone without getting massive phone bills. I'm not gonna call or text but only use it for music, pictures and Wi-Fi. Am I safe if I just turn off data and put my phone on airplane mode?

I'm travelling to the US to go on a cruise very soon and i don't want to pay roaming charges, can i just remove the sim card and use it just for the camera? I don't need to call or text (but would i be able to text if there was Wi-Fi?) all info is helpful thanks. i just want to use the phone for the camera. I don't want to call or text. should i just take out the sim card?
  • IPhone 4S No Service ABROAD? I have had my iPhone 4S since December 2012 I had a contract with the phone but the contract has since ended! Whenever I had taken my phone abroad it had always said NO SERVICE I could not get a signal no matter what I tried, from the minute I landed to the minute I left and this was every trip. I have since gone on to pay as you go on the same iPhone I'm wondering if it's likely to be a handset issue or if it was a SIM card/account issue?
